The U.S. and Canada are both diverting significant sums away from scientific research to support social justice instead, as I describe in my newest National Post piece.
Ok, so this is fairly labeled trolling, but.... Physicists first give us the tools by which we can destroy everything everywhere in a highly efficient manner, and then.... They lecture us about not sufficiently funding their work.
Seriously, the question that the science community should be addressing is....
How much power can human beings successfully manage?
For the purposes of this post I'll define "successfully manage" as not crashing the civilization that science depends upon.
Disappointing that NSF is now following the anti-meritocratic path. Having been someone who benefited from being good at test taking that allow me to escape the shop class/ mechanic path my K-12 eduction had me on this trend will be detrimental to the future of this planet. We will need the super bright nerds who understand the details to allow humanity to continue to solve the problems of poverty and starvation in a world with 3 billion more people on the way.
I think you will agree that it is a good idea to provide a small amount of money so that the various departments (remember to ) consider whether their hiring or promotion, etc, practices do not involve intentional or unintentional discrimination. Ideally, this should be done automatically, without the need of nudging. The STEM faculty, however, is typically too busy to even think about this issue. Apart from this, I also agree that all the STEM grants should be allocated to the substance of STEM.
believe me.. after 40 years, with the explicit requirement that if an offer is not made to any woman who might be on a short list must be justified in writing to the Dean, which is the case in most institutions for this time, no one needs reminding.. This issue is not something that is not thought about.. it is alll that has been thought about since I was chair of a department in the 1990's

FYI in case you have not seen her book. Interview with author Susan Neiman. I have not yet read her book, but I agree with what she says here.
