Is Astrobiology in Trouble?
The need to maintain scientific standards is one thing, but 'citation justice' takes the field in the opposite direction.
I have written earlier in Critical Mass about the recent disturbing trend infecting the scientific Search for Extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) with some researchers in the field arguing that our search could somehow be tainted by racism, and that the whole effort should be decolonized, including changing the name, to get rid of the word “intelligence”, which smacks, somehow of white supremacism.
This is just one of the more recent problems associated with this emerging field, which promises so much in the long run.
I describe this is in a recent piece I wrote that just appeared today in Quillette. Since the piece is not behind a pay wall, I am simply linking to it here.
Dr. Krauss The most important take away from your article is to take sensational claims with a grain of salt even when they come from seemingly credible sources. You. would think that NASA would know better. This is the reason I read books written by people I trust including you, Richard Dawkins rather than relying on information in the press.
I haven't read the full article yet (but will later), so I am just reacting to Lawrence's initial comments here.
I actually facepalmed myself while reading this. I read a good definition of WOKE yesterday "The state of mind that finds EVERYTHING 'problematic' expect your own behavior". Clown world is destroying academia and free speech. Thank Sagan for scientists like Dr Krauss.
Edit: I was actually hoping that this post was dated 1st April and that Lawrence was just having a joke with us.
